How To Get Classic Scrollbar Back In Ubuntu 11.04 and 11.10 [Tip]

Ubuntu 11.04 Natty came with many undesirable changes. The overlay scrollbar was perhaps one of the most distasteful changes among these changes. While some users might find it convenient to auto-hide the scrollbar, some of us just can’t seem to stand it. Moreover, the overlay scrollbar also fails to show up sometimes, perhaps due to it’s buggy nature. In my opinion it’s just another half backed cookie from Canonical.

If for some reason you want to get the old scrollbar back in Ubuntu 11.04 or Ubuntu 11.10, here is a small tip to do just that.

Overlay Scrollbar 2

To get the classic scrollbar back, open Synaptic Package Manager and search for the package named “liboverlay-scrollbar”. Once found, remove the package via right-click menu. Restart your computer for the changes to take effect.

Remove

This will give you the classic scrollbar back (as shown in the below image).

Note: Make sure you backup your system or save the package details for re-installation purposes and to undo the scrollbar changes (if required) to avoid any issues.
