How To Upgrade From Ubuntu 12.04 To Ubuntu 12.10 Quantal Quetzal

The final version of Ubuntu 12.10 Quantal Quetzal has now been released and you can easily upgrade your Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin OS to the latest Ubuntu operating system. If you wish to upgrade your Ubuntu 12.04 operating system to Ubuntu 12.10 Quantal Quetzal, then follow the guidelines given below.

Backup

Before upgrading your Ubuntu operating system it is advised to backup your Ubuntu 12.04 OS to revert the changes in case something goes wrong during or after the upgrade process. For instructions regarding the backup of your Ubuntu machine, check out these Linux Backup Tools.

Instructions

Step 1: Hit ALT and F2 (ALT+F2) and type the command given below.

update-manager –d

Note: Make sure that you give a space between the word “Manager” and “–d”. If you are using a laptop, you might require using a slightly different key combination such as ALT+FN+F2.

Step 2: The update manager will show up in the Unity Dash, click this option to open the Update Manger window. Here you will see an option that Ubuntu 12.10 Quantal Quetzal is available for upgrade. Click Upgrade to start the upgrade process.

In case the update option does not appear, go to Settings –> Updates and select “For Any New Version”. Once, done, repeat step 1.

Step 3: A new window will pop-up, displaying the release notes for Quantal Quetzal. Click Upgrade to continue and follow the on-screen instructions. During the installation process old packages will be removed, new packages will be installed and some old applications may either be removed or might not work with the updated operating system.

Step 4: Once the initial process is complete you will be asked to upgrade to the latest Ubuntu version, click Start Upgrade to begin the process of updating your operating system. This prompt will also provide you with information about the packages that will be removed and downloaded, as well as the ETA for the upgrade process.

Step 5: The rest of the process is pretty much automated except for some occasional prompts. The steps involved in updating to Quantal Quetzal are quite similar to any usual Ubuntu update. During the upgrade process you might receive certain prompts to alert you of possible issues and to provide you with a prompt to ask for permission to perform certain functions.

Your Graphic Hardware Might Not Be Compatible

You might receive a prompt that your Graphic Hardware is not compatible with the new Ubuntu version and that upgrading might result in possible issues. Read the instructions carefully before proceeding with upgrade if this prompt appears. As mentioned earlier some applications and packages will not work with the new version of Ubuntu, hence you will be asked to remove them during the upgrade process.
