Problem: Brightstor Arcserve Backup Device manager is always busy whether migrating data or not.

I manage a Brightstor server that is used to backup about 15 servers, Windows and Unix.

I find that more times than not when I need to perform maintenance on my tapes from the Device Manager I receive a “Device is busy. Please try later.” Error message. I understand that if a migration is running, this error should occur but this is happening before a migration ever begins and even when no backup jobs are running at all. I’ve found that I can restart my server and things will run fine for about 1 or 2 backup jobs then the error message returns. For obvious reason I can’t restart my backup server every day to ensure things run smoothly. Because I can’t erase or mount new tapes, backups are failing due to there not being a available tapes.

I’ve attempted to contact CA support but they appear rather incompetent, and never seem to be able to resolve my problems. I am hoping someone can provide me with some information on how to resolve this.

Thanks in advance.

Solution: Brightstor Arcserve Backup Device manager is always busy whether migrating data or not.

I ended up reinstalling all the agents and the Brightstor server and things seem to be working better. I believe there was some sort of database corruption that was causing these problems.
