Many people use paid disc burning utilities like Nero suite for burning data to discs. There are many free alternatives but unfortunately people are unaware of them.
7Burn is a portable and feature rich CD/DVD and Blu-ray Disc burning software, which is designed to work through IMAPIv2. It supports a large number of writable discs, including, CD-R, CD-RW, DVD ROM, DVD-RDVD-RAM, DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD+R Dual Layer, DVD-RW, DVD-RW Sequential, DVD-R DL Sequential, DVD-R Dual Layer, DVD+RW DL, HD DVD-ROM, HD DVD-R, HD DVD-RAM, Blu-ray DVD (BD-ROM), Blu-ray media Sequential, Blu-ray media and Blu-ray Rewritable media.
Other than being a CD and DVD burning software, it provides additional features like the option to create and burn ISO disc images and erasing rewritable discs. It is pretty lightweight and merely consumed 32MB memory during the burning process (during testing). You can download it in portable form or with an installer package.
From the main interface of 7Burn, you can select options to write data to a disc, create or burn an ISO image, erase a disc or burn an audio CD. Clicking on an option leads to more sub-options.
To burn files or folders to a disc, select “Burn Files…..” option from the main interface and head over to the Burn Disk tab. Add files or/and folders to burn and click Start Burn. The burning process of 7Burn is quite smooth and completes within a reasonable time frame. I am normally reluctant to try new disc burners, but this one was worth checking out.
The Format Disc tab provides easy options to erase rewritable discs. Just insert a re-writable disc in the DVD ROM and click Format Disk to erase it.
You can easily create and burn ISO images with 7Burn. To create an ISO image, go to the Build Image tab, add the desired file(s) or folder(s) and click Build Image. Similarly, You can Burn an image by adding a ISO file from the Burn Image tab. The image creation process takes as much memory as the disc burning process i.e. not much.
7Burn also supports audio CD burning of WAV files. I do hope that the developer adds more audio formats soon.
7Burn is a useful and feature rich disc burning utility which provides the convenience of portability, less memory consumption and disc burning within a reasonable time frame. An additional feature like DVD Video encoding can bring this open source tool at power to the Nero Suite, as that seems to be a few things missing from 7Burn.
