Gnome Subtitles is a subtitle editing application for Linux which makes subtitles file editing, splitting and merging easy. It comes with packages for Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, Arch Linux, etc. It allows editing every subtitle lines bit by bit. Gnome Subtitles allows to add a reaction delay for the start and end time of the subtitles so that you can increase or decrease the subtitle display duration. Furthermore, supports most commonly used subtitle formats including SRT, MacSUB, SubViewer, SubCreator, Panimator, MPSub, ViPlay Subtitle File, AQ Title and many more. Some of it’s main features include:
- Support for merging and splitting subtitle lines
- Option to view character counts in the subtitle list and editing area
- Ability to apply a reaction delay when timing start/end on video playback
- Video slow and fast motion options
- Shortcuts for quick timings change:
- Increase/decrease subtitle start time: Ctrl+Plus/Minus (on the numpad)
- Increase/decrease subtitle end time: Alt+Plus/Minus (on the numpad)
- Shift subtitles: Shift+Plus/Minus (on the numpad)
- You can automatically seek the video when subtitle times are changed, with an option to rewind it some milliseconds
- Support for the Fab Subtitler subtitle format
- It allow to insert a new subtitle at the current video position, applying a reaction delay if set
- Translation file names are based on the original file name plus language
- Support for buggy SubRip files that use dots instead of commas
- Detect when selecting a video file as the subtitle file
Gnome Subtitles can be installed on Ubuntu 11.10, Ubuntu 11.04, Ubuntu 10.10 and Ubuntu 10.04 from the below PPA or the developers website link at the end of this post.

Click Open and import a subtitles file to edit. Gnome Subtitles displays each subtitle with Start, End and Duration fields, allowing you to quickly change the start and end time duration. The buttons on top toolbar allow changing the font and style of the subtitles, as well as adding or removing subtitle lines. Once you are done with the editing process, click Save to save your edited subtitle file.
Gnome Subtitles can also be used for manual translation of subtitles, as you can replace the subtitle text with your native language (e.g. English to French). Gnome Subtitles has packages available for
