Get Weather Information & Forecast In Ubuntu With My Weather Indicator

Recently I covered Forecaster and WinThunder which are Windows applications for obtaining weather information from the system tray.

My Weather Indicator is a similar tool for Ubuntu users which displays detailed weather information and a four day forecast of a selected city. Other than current temperature, it also shows  dew point, wind information, sunrise and sunset time, periodic prompts for weather condition changes and moon info.

You can install My Weather indicator by entering the following PPA in Software Sources from Ubuntu Software Center –> Edit (from the Gnome Panel) -> Software Sources. In case you do not know the procedure, see my post How To Add PPA To Software Sources In Ubuntu .

ppa:atareao/atareao

Alternatively, you can open a Terminal window and enter the following commands to install My Weather Indicator:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:atareao/atareao && sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install my-weather-indicator

After installation, launch My Weather Indicator from Applications menu.

Click on Search Location, enter your city and country’s name (separated by a comma) and click Search Location (long horizontal button). Click OK to continue. When you enter a city, the longitude and latitude automatically shows up for the selected area. This might also be a good way to check coordinates for an area.

The Temperature tab allows a temperature format to view the weather information.The available formats include Celsius, Fahrenheit and Kelvin.

General Options tab allows setting weather update interval (e.g. every 5 mins, 10, mins 15 mins ,etc). You can also check Auto start check-box to automatically start My Weather Indicator at system startup.

Notifications tab allows settings the weather details for getting notifications, these include, temperature change, humidity, wind conditions and general weather changes. You can uncheck any of these options to avoid getting details about them.

Periodic prompts will show up according to your selected options.

Weather Conditions

The system tray icon shows current weather and changes icon according to weather conditions, such as it becomes  a cloud when the weather is cloudy. You can get detailed information for current weather conditions by clicking on this icon. The available information includes humidity, moon info, sunrise and sunset time, haze, dew point, terminal sensation, and current temperature. You can manually refresh the weather details by clicking on Refresh Weather.

Clicking on the Forecast option from system tray displays a four day weather forecast of your area.
