The final version of Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin is out and now you can upgrade your Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot to the latest Ubuntu version, by following the steps given below. Before starting the upgrade process make sure that you have ample space in your primary disk partition, as Ubuntu upgrades often result in lack of remaining disk space due to the extra files that are added during the update process. Also check out the precautionary note given below.Important Note: It is highly recommended that you create a system back before initiating the upgrade process. Before you upgrade, don’t forget to checkout the New Features of Ubuntu 12.04 (Precise Pangolin).
Step 1: To upgrade from Ubuntu 11.10 to 12.04, hit ALT and F2 (ALT+F2) and type the following:
update-manager –d
Note: Make sure that you give a space between the word manager and –d. If you are using a laptop, you might have to use the following key combination (ALT+FN+F2), depending upon your laptop type.
Step 2: This will open the update manager window and show you that Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin is available for upgrade. Click Upgrade to start the upgrade process.
Step 3: A new window will pop-up, displaying the release notes for Precise Pangolin. Click Upgrade to continue.
Step 4: After that the upgrade tool will start downloading.
Step 5: You will be prompted to enter your password after which the upgrade process will initiate. During the upgrade process you may have to enter your password on several occasions.
Step 6: While your operating system upgrades, new software channels will be setup, new packages will be installed, and existing packages will be upgraded. Furthermore, old repositories will also be cleaned up. It is worth mentioning here that some applications will become obsolete and will not be usable with the updated version.
Step 7: Before you reach a point where the operating system starts getting upgraded, you will be displayed with the number of unsupported packages that will be removed, the number of new packages that will be installed, the time that it will take for the process to complete and the amount of disk space that will be used. While many users might simply click Start Upgrade, it might be worth checking out this prompt to see if you have the required disk space.
Step 8: Once you click “Start Upgrade”, the required changes will be made to your operating system.
Step 9: You will be shown several prompts during the upgrade process, e.g. prompt for replacing the customized configuration file.
Step 10: Once the Update is complete, you will be asked to restart your computer for the changes to take effect.
After your system reboots, you will have the latest version of Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin on your computer.
