Problem : The following error occurred while attempting to save properties for groups Administrators. Access is denied

i have noticed on some workstations on our network we cannot add users to the local groups ( administrators, power users etc).

If i try to add a user, it lets me, but as soon as i click Apply or OK, i get this message:

The following error occurred while attempting to save properties for groups Administrators on computer COMPUTERNAME.  Access is denied.

Any ideas?  we have 40 desktops on our network. the Server is running windows server 2000 and all desktops are XP Pro.  out of the 40 desktops, there is 5 that we came set permissions on.

I have already looked at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/236374 and logged in as admin and it wont work either.

I don’t believe this isn’t a registry issue, it’s a permissions issue, basically the Admin account you used was corrupt especially if you’re unable to add a user to the Local Administrators Group as that Admin user?  Was this the local Administrator or a Domain Admin account that you were using to logon in Safe Mode? and was this the same User you were using previously and got access denied?
