Baldur’s Gate 3: Soldier Background Guide – Quests and Inspiration

Earning Soldier Inspirations

To earn Inspiration Points as a Soldier, you must display tactical smarts and unwavering bravery in battle. These goals are usually aligned with a ‘neutral-good’ disposition, reflecting your duty as a virtuous protector. Most Soldier Inspirations revolve around combat scenarios, so be ready to face goblins, drow, and duergar.

Below is a table outlining all the Soldier Inspirations available in Act One and hints for achieving them:

Inspiration Goal Description Hints
One for the Ages Survive a fight in which you kill ten or more enemies. Wipe out the Goblin Camp without poisoning the drunk goblins. This ensures enough enemies for the goal.
Pentacrush Kill 5 enemies in a single turn. Use AoE spells like ‘Cloud of Daggers’ or ‘Spirit Guardians’ to manage enemy health and eliminate multiple foes at once.
Warrior of the Hells Kill the cultist leader seeking Karlach. Seek out Karlach early, preventing her from refusing to join. Find the cultist leader northwest of Karlach’s starting position.
To Arms! Help Guex learn how to fight. Easily accomplished with a low Ability Check. Locate Guex in the Druid’s Grove struggling against a practice dummy.
Conqueror of Conquerors Defeat the Githyanki raiding squad. Expect a challenging fight; persistence is key. Don’t be discouraged if multiple attempts are required to triumph.
Drowned in the Dark Defeat the Duergar patrolling on the Ebonlake. Initiate the battle by pushing the Duergar leader into the Ebonlake for a straightforward victory.
No One Left Behind Ensure all of the Grove’s defenders survive the first goblin assault. Prioritize healing the human defenders at the gate to safeguard them against the goblin assault’s main focus.
Strategist Destroy a powerful foe in one strike. Defeat the Spider Matriarch beneath the Blighted Village by pushing or using a spell like Thunderwave to knock it off a ledge for an immediate victory.
Chain of Command Follow Flaming Fist orders at the burning inn. Save Councillor Florrick at Waukeen’s Rest to fulfill the requirement. Saving Benryn isn’t necessary for obtaining this Inspiration.

Completing an Inspiration goal awards 25 XP and an Inspiration Point for rerolling failed ability checks. You can hold up to 4 Inspiration Points at once, usable by any party member.

Choosing Your Class

The Soldier background is versatile and can be combined with various classes. While it naturally complements melee builds, the proficiency in Athletics can benefit magic users as well. Magic users can use Athletics to position themselves advantageously and access higher ledges for better spell accuracy.

Moreover, Soldiers can exploit the game’s unique pushing mechanics by using their Athletics proficiency to push enemies off ledges. While this can secure victories, keep in mind that you’ll forfeit enemy loot if they fall into a chasm.
