With the full release of Baldur’s Gate 3 allowing co-op multiplayer, some players are finding themselves unable to remove custom characters that joined their party from their friends’ games. Here’s what we know about this problem and potential solutions.
Can you remove custom characters from your party in Baldur’s Gate 3?
Unfortunately, at this time there is no direct method to dismiss a custom co-op character from your Baldur’s Gate 3 party. Once another player brings their created companion into your campaign, that character becomes bound to your save file rather than their player account.
This can create problems if you want to streamline your party or restart the campaign. The issue is especially disruptive for online multiplayer games with random matchmaking. Custom characters can end up stuck in your group indefinitely.
Why removing isn’t allowed
The reason behind this design lies in the structure of Baldur’s Gate 3’s save files. When a co-op character joins a party, they become bound to the campaign save files rather than individual player accounts. Allowing custom characters to freely move between saves could lead to over-leveling and create an exploitable loophole. The game’s design also offers players the flexibility to create multiple characters for different campaigns.
Temporary solutions
Since the game currently doesn’t allow directly kicking these characters, the only option is reverting to an older save from before the troublesome co-op session. This is far from ideal, forcing players to redo progress to purge the lingering custom character.
Until Baldur’s Gate 3 adds the ability to directly remove characters, players should be cautious about who they allow to join campaigns and make frequent backups before multiplayer. Sadly, this is the only recourse for now if you end up with an unwanted permanent companion gumming up your party.
