In May 2023, Blizzard dropped a bombshell: the Story Mode was officially scrapped. In this article, we’ll explore the rise and fall of the Overwatch 2 Story Mode and what lies ahead.

The End of PvE Hero Missions

In 2019, Blizzard initially unveiled Overwatch 2 with the promise of player-versus-environment (PvE) Hero Missions. These missions were designed to provide players with immersive narrative experiences, allowing them to team up and take on various challenges within the Overwatch universe.

However, in May 2023, Game Director Aaron Keller and Executive Producer Jared Neuss delivered the disappointing news that Overwatch 2 would no longer feature PvE Hero Missions. This decision left many fans disheartened, as they had been looking forward to these cooperative adventures.

The Emergence of Story Missions

While the cancellation of PvE Hero Missions was a blow to the community, Blizzard had a different plan in mind. In recent months, the company revealed its new approach: Story Missions. These missions are set against the backdrop of the “Invasion” storyline and take place in three distinct maps: Rio de Janeiro, Toronto, and Gothenburg.

In this narrative arc, players must unite against Null Sector, a rogue Omnic group that initiated a global takeover by invading Paris. Chronologically, these Story Missions occur after Winston’s Recall short, where he called upon heroes to reassemble Overwatch. As a result, players will witness how iconic heroes first met and the events leading up to the invasion.

Gameplay Experience

Each Story Mission is expected to last approximately half an hour to forty minutes, depending on the chosen difficulty level and player coordination. While some players might find themselves dealing with that one friend who tends to wander off, the missions are designed to be engaging and enjoyable for all participants.

Notably, players now have the freedom to choose their heroes for these missions, allowing for a more personalized gameplay experience. Additionally, Blizzard has enhanced the AI for PvE team members, ensuring a seamless experience even when a player disconnects and a bot takes their place.

How to Unlock Story Missions

Access to Story Missions requires purchasing the “Overwatch 2: Invasion Bundle” for $15. This bundle not only grants temporary access to the story missions during the season but also provides players with 1000 Overwatch Coins, equivalent to the cost of the Premium Battle Pass. Furthermore, players will receive a new Sojourn Legendary skin and permanent access to Sojourn as a playable hero upon completing Story Mission Challenges.

While the highly anticipated Story Mode for Overwatch 2 was scrapped, Blizzard has creatively adapted to player expectations by introducing Story Missions. These missions promise to provide an immersive narrative experience, shedding light on the origins of beloved heroes and their interactions before the invasion by Null Sector. As the gaming community eagerly explores this new form of storytelling, only time will tell if Blizzard has more surprises in store for the Overwatch 2 universe.
