Bungie may reconsider community engagement following the Destiny 2 Season 21 leaks

To gauge interest in Destiny 2 and to get feedback on how the studio could improve, Bungie hosted the first community summit in 2018. The event brought together many of the most prominent content creators in the Destiny 2 community at the studio’s headquarters. Community summits have since become the norm, with Bungie inviting players at least once a year to discuss ideas for Destiny 2 and where the player base thinks the developer should put their attention.

However, due to recent leaks about the upcoming Season of the Deap, this year’s summit may be the last one held. The leaked images that have recently gone viral online appear to have been taken at a Bungie presentation.

Following the leaks, Bungie warned that if something similar happens again, it may need to reconsider holding these community summits. In response to these leaks, Bungie stated on Twitter that the summits with the community and content creators were confidential.

The posts go on to say that Bungie plans to review and reinforce existing policies regarding these summits, but that any further “breaches of trust” could result in an end to the community summits altogether.

Several well-known members of the Destiny 2 community were quick to respond to the tweets, echoing the studio’s position on the alleged breach of trust that came out of the latest community summit. The community seems to know what a privilege the summits have been and doesn’t want Bungie to stop holding them. They also want community members to be careful not to break the studio’s trust in future summits.

Notable members of the Destiny 2 community like Datto and Aztecross have yet to comment on the situation, but it would not be surprising if they did so in an effort to maintain trust with Bungie.

Leaks are nothing new to the Destiny 2 community, but sometimes it seems like there are just as many false leaks as there are real ones. Especially in the days leading up to Lightfall’s release, it seemed like new pastebin posts and other alleged leaks were appearing online on a semi-regular basis, all claiming to have details about the next year of content in Destiny 2. While many of these were false and merely represented one user’s opinion on how the year should pan out, others, like Lightfall’s key art and early concept art for Strand, found their way online almost by accident.
