A new leak for Destiny 2 reveals potential changes to leveling system in Season of the Deep

Bungie has made a number of changes to Destiny 2’s gameplay and quality of life with the release of Lightfall and Season of Defiance, and if a new leak is to be believed, the studio won’t be slowing down anytime soon, with a revamped leveling system expected in Season of the Deep.

Guardian Ranks and buildcrafting are two of the most notable changes brought to the game by the latest expansion, with other features such as in-game LFG set to debut later in 2023. However, a change to the current gear-driven leveling system has been a long-standing player request to Bungie, and this leak suggests Bungie is finally responding to this request.

Previous rumors suggested Bungie was planning a major change to Destiny 2’s leveling system, moving away from the gear grind. The most recent information indicates that “Power levels,” which can be earned by completing missions and gaining experience points, will be a focus for players.  Players would gain one level for every 250,000 XP earned, while completing weekly and seasonal challenges would award one to three levels depending on difficulty.

The idea behind this change appears to be to give players more freedom when it comes to the gear they use, as the current power level system requires grinding for higher-level gear in order to tackle higher-difficulty activities like raids and Grandmaster Nightfalls. However, Bungie has not confirmed whether any of the suggested changes are true and will most likely not comment on them until closer to Season of the Deep’s launch date of May 23, 2023.

If the leak is true, it will effectively end weapon sunsetting and allow players to pull beloved classics from their collections or vaults because they will be usable again. The Mountaintop and Recluse, the one-two combo that dominated Destiny 2 in the months following Forsaken’s release, are two such weapons that could return. However, these two weapons and many others were removed from the game because of problems with power creep, which a new power level system might reintroduce unless Bungie makes adjustments to compensate for the level change.
