Microsoft Sharepoint : The formula contains reference(s) to field(s) error in sharepoint services

Problem  : The formula contains reference(s) to field(s) error in sharepoint services

Following the instructions in the Microsoft Sharepoint Services training book, I created a Sharepoint list in datasheet view and attempted to create a automated calculation of a column COST to create a 17.5% value of VAT in an alternative column.  The training book confirms the formulas are simular to Excel but when I try:

=[Cost]*0.75

I receive an error message of  ‘The formula contains reference(s) to field(s)’

I believe this should work, could someone advise me what I’m doing wrong?

Solution : The formula contains reference(s) to field(s) error in sharepoint services

I guess you’re trying to use a regular datafield and have entered the formula in the field “Default value: Calculated value”. As far as I know that’s not the correct way to do it.

I suggest this:
When you add the new column “COST” choose “Calculated (calculation based on other columns)”. The formula box will appear and you can insert the columns you need to use in your formula.
