Summoner Names have been a part of League of Legends since the game’s launch, but Riot Games believes that the time is right for a change. Players who are not happy with their current Summoner Name will have the opportunity to change it to a Riot ID for free in November. Here’s everything you need to know.
What is a Riot ID?
A Riot ID will be your in-game name in games like Legends of Runeterra, Project A, Wild Rift, and future titles coming to Riot Games. It replaces the Summoner Name and serves as your unique identifier. A Riot ID consists of two parts: your in-game name and a hashtag followed by three-to-five numbers or letters. The characters following the hashtag won’t show up in-game but will be visible on your friends list when hovering over a friend.
How to Check Your Riot ID
You can check your Riot ID using the following methods:
- Via Account Management:
- Log into your account at account.riotgames.com.
- Your Riot ID should be listed at the top of the page.
- In-Game (League of Legends):
- Log into the League of Legends game client.
- Hover over your profile picture at the top right.
- Your Riot ID will be displayed.
How to Change Summoner Name to Riot ID
Starting from November 20, Riot Games will offer one free name change to al players. If you wish to purchase additional name changes, it will cost approximately $10 USD in in-game currency. Follow these steps to make the transition:
- Log in to your account using the Riot client.
- After signing in, click on the profile icon located in the upper right corner of the client.
- Look for “Account Details” and click on it. This will open a new tab in your web browser and may prompt you to log in again.
- In the new tab, locate the section labeled “Riot ID.”
- Within that section, you’ll find your game name and tagline.
- Edit your Riot ID to your preferred name.
- Once you’re satisfied, click “Save Changes.”
That’s it! You’ve successfully changed your Summoner Name to a Riot ID. Keep in mind that you’re allowed one free name change, so choose wisely to avoid extra charges.

The transition from Summoner Names to Riot IDs is happening to better align with the evolving lore of Runeterra, League of Legends, and Summoner’s Rift. The concept of Summoners, who brought the original roster of Champions to the Rift, has evolved over the years. This update is designed to better match the current world of League of Legends, create more fluidity between all of Riot’s titles, and streamline the way names work from a technical perspective.
